Yea... I remember my first radio contact. My voice and hands were shaking and I couldn't remember the other operator's callsign... :)) It's better to use CQ CQ CQ DE CALLSIGN so they know you're reaching out. Otherwise they'll think it's someone reaching out to someone else.
Haha yeah it is obvious that you are new by holding device as a cell phone 😊
Thanks for posting. Today is day 1 for study towards my licence.
Vi being Vi....despite this hicup, .nice work , kudos!!
where?
I just got the same radio upgraded my antenna and I can hear people, but I guess I’m not reaching the repeater or maybe I just don’t have the settings the right way I seen the video you struggle to something you changed that you can let me know so maybe I can do it myself
what frequencies were u using?
Congrats! I got my license several weeks ago but can't decide what radio to get, so I have made no contact either. Lol
this video genuinely made me smile
2024 and still using 3 of these awesome stuff
I remember my first contact. Hope to speak in the future / de M7NTE
Can you upload the "Power M" music file somewhere? It's pretty cool.
Hi Steve, I just ran across this video a couple years later. Now I'm wondering - why did your license get cancelled just a couple weeks later?
Yo that bird uses ham radio …he was ur first contact
I thought we started with CQ CQ?
Congrats on your licensure Steve. I got a CB radio recently thinking I would hear some chatter from the freeway that’s 6 blocks away but so far haven’t heard anything. Maybe I need a bigger antenna 🤔
I heard you that day, just ignored it.
Puedes hacer un video haciendo el proyecto, por favor
Hi Steve, i love your video so much, very emotional. I live in Vietnam, where banned hams radio, which for communist staff only.
Cool!
This was great to watch but also reminds me the side of the hobby I hate. I never understood the appeal of making contact just to have awkward conversations exchanging contacts and having awkward conversations about the weather and location. While almost any topic can be discussed, the obsession with avoiding things like politics, religion, and current events really takes some excitement out of the hobby. However, I have always found the contests like fox hunting and QSO to be interesting because I'm competitive.
haha nuts
This absolutely made my day. Congrats!
Well in mate great effort 👏👏👏
Fantastic. Love this video. Thanks for sharing! 🙌
How are things in the radio world? You still making contacts? Are there weekly nets in your area? I hope you're still enjoying the hobby :)
I still have my Franklin Ace 1000 I got in grade school back around '84. I've also acquired a second Ace 1000, a II+ and IIc. Good times!
I still find it awkward talking to people on the radio, but the first contact was the hardest. Nice job putting yourself out there! the hobby is so much fun. Before you know it, you will have a shack set up!
Congratulation, this is YG3BCO from Indonesia, 73
excellent update! took me a while to figure out the firmware update process but once I did, I can now use my wireless mouse at decent speeds!
Welcome to the hobby! I'm a year late but hope you are still hamming it up!
That was cool :) You are a cool guy 😎
Maybe a bit late, but welcome to the family :)
Heartbreaking! First indoor contact on a handie is going to be hard work in any case, but I remember that feeling well. Tips for any new micshy radio operator: Answer other people calling out. Get higher up, use the terrain rather than struggling from ground level. If you’re nervous and want to build confidence fast, try SOTA or contests, because the contacts aren’t rag chewing, they’re quick and you’ll not get drawn into a long chat. SOTA and contests are great because other operators want to speak with you - they get points for responding. Good luck, and 73.
What an honest and wholesome video. You did a great job learning on the fly. I cheered when you made your first contact. Bravo.
found one of those things on leboncoin (a ebay copy for france) for 25 euros and it probably came from a school, since a kid forgot to add paper and some stuff got printed on the roller, and it appears to be homework. the ribbon is still good tho it was a little broken, i had to fix the cartridge mover for color printing which would get stuck all the time, now it dosent even get stuck once and it works well. id say it was a sucessful purchase.
I especially enjoyed the subtitles to the morse code. Way to go! Gives me confidence to make my own first call! :)
That's a great printer! Awesome that yours still works so well after all these years.
Man it put a huge smile on my face when you got that first response! This is motivation for me to get certified! Always wanted to get into Ham and I think I am finally taking the dive!
Startup noise was great on that printer.
So wholesome:)
dogcow
Congratulations, i really want to buy my first radio ever, so i'm looking for some information about the Aficionado's radio. Is that the same that Civil Band radio?. Regards from Mexico City.
hey man dont worry, its all live, you literally have to be by your radio to even hear the callouts in the first place... its about timing.... helps to be on when there are masses of ppl on, but its really just random unless you've already contacted and know where to find someone
Gorgeous!!
Cool! Mine lost the little magnet in the lid that operates the lid open/closed sensor. I have to rest a fridge magnet on it to make it print LOL
Worth it to hear your hearty "woohoo!" at the end! :) Do *you* like applesauce?
Hell yeah! I got one of these bad boys on eBay a couple years ago, and it still works brilliantly. And yes, they are *surprisingly* heavy! Supposedly they'll print in color if you get the right cartridge and the right software, but I haven't tried it out. But I love hearing the sounds of my elementary school days again. :)
